The weapons dealer was a seven-foot Jaccian with four tentacles, no eyelids, and a revolting odor. Dealing with it was a harrowing experience. Perhaps calling it a "he" would be more appropriate, since the creature radiated definite lascivious inclinations. Ranie hated him on sight, snarling and lunging, until Eirene was forced to secure the flap of the knapsack.

"Me help you, lady?" the Jaccian shrilled in a singsong voice, leering at Eirene and trying to peer down the front of her robe.

She edged away, drawing the fabric protectively around her. "I wish to purchase a stun gun."

"Ah! You have enemy? Me sell you excellent disrupter. Fry enemy's brain, then he die—slow."

He stared at her breasts, his lust increasing exponentially. Slime began oozing from the barbs in his tentacles, intensifying his horrible smell. From inside the knapsack, Ranie chattered in protest. Covering her nose, Eirene was sorely tempted to take him up on his offer, purchase a disrupter, and put him out of commission permanently.

That she could have such a thought shocked her. She'd never wanted to harm anyone in her life, not even her cruel uncle or his henchmen. She'd always considered healers above such leanings. She shook her head. "The stun gun will do."

He moved closer, his glittering, unblinking gaze sweeping down her body. "You have gold?"

Backing up, she held out a gemstone she'd pried from the hilt of one of her jeweled daggers. "I have this to trade. I expect the stunner and some miterons in return."

He snatched the gem, and she hastily wiped her hand on her robe. "Stunner for this," he intoned. "No miterons."

"That's outrageous," she argued. "The stone is worth much more than a single weapon. I've gotten clothing, food, and lodging for an entire week with one just like it."

"Stunner for gem," he insisted. "Me give charger for free."

She hadn't considered such matters as charging the gun. She knew very little about weapons, and certainly didn't understand the settings on a stun gun.

Since she was anxious to get back to the landing bay to help Jarek, she didn't want to take the time to find a jeweler and haggle over a fair price for the gem. She also wanted to get as far away from this Jaccian as possible.

"I'll give you the stone if you'll trade me a weapon that's already charged and explain the settings to me," she said in resignation.

"Me show you many things," the Jaccian singsonged, pocketing the gem.

He had a lot of things in mind, all right, all of them sexual in nature. Eirene struggled to ignore his lust. But then he decided to wrap a tentacle around her. That did it. She sent him a strong burst of energy, overstimulating the nerve endings in the offending tentacle. She didn't even worry about her powers malfunctioning, not caring if she accidentally fried him.

When he dropped the stunner with a shriek of pain, she scooped up the weapon and her satchel and ran, Ranie squealing all the way. She hurried toward the landing bay.
